When J. Murray Luck pauses to contemplate the thriving series of Annual Reviews he has developed, we trust that he experiences the good feeling which comes with solid accomplishment. In the thirty-six years since the appearance of the original Annual Review of Biochemistry, thirteen other Reviews have appeared: each a testimonial of the discipline it represents to the value of this method of summarizing and evaluating the results of scientific research. The high standards set by the older members of the series have been instrumental in the initiation and rapid acceptance of the more recent Reviews. Today the entire series is well known and highly respected internationally.

This volume, which appears in the year Murray Luck intends to relinquish the post of Editor-in-Chief, we dedicate to him in gratitude for his encouragement and help in the development of our own Annual Review of Pharmacology. We look forward to his continuing participation in the activities of Annual Reviews as a member of the Board of Directors and congratulate him on the many accomplishments of his full and varied career.
